East edged Metea Valley, 104-102.12 for the IHSA Class 3A Bartlett Sectional title at Streamwood's Millenium Field, an announcement that got the Saints to stepping and embracing. The next stop on the dance card: The state meet at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium next weekend.
St. Charles East’s Jake Mazanke evened the scorecard in his potential five-round bout with Geneva’s Peter Archibald on Thursday. If Mazanke has his druthers, the senior boys track and field standouts will be allies next spring.

“(The 800) was definitely an insanely difficult race, mentally and physically,” Archibald said. “(The county and school record) was the one thing I was looking for a long time.”Mazanke would have some consolation when he anchored the Saints’ 1,600 relay to their lone title.
“I will fully admit that Kelsey and Jordan were in the dance party,” smiling St. Charles East coach Denise Hefferinsaid afterward. “I was a little nervous, but they ran a really great race. Kelsey got off real strong at the start, which solidified the fact we were going to go for an individual win there, and Jordan came on real strong just like she did in the 400."
Williams won the 400 in 59.44 seconds while anchoring East's champion 4x100 relay (50.19) and the 4x400 relay that closed the night in a sharp 4:03.17, more than 10 seconds better than West Aurora.
St. Charles East girls track coach Denise Hefferin looked at her stop watch and exuberantly threw up her arms as Mallory Abel crossed the finish line.
The senior’s time of 10 minutes, 59.32 seconds in the 3,200-meter run was a new personal best, breaking a mark she set a long time ago at the same place — the Gus Scott Invitational at Naperville North.
Nick Devor remembered his false start leading off a relay at St. Charles East’s last indoor meet of the season. How disappointed he felt denying his teammates the chance to run.The senior wouldn’t allow that Saturday at the Saints’ own Elmore McCornack Invitational. The nonscoring, all-relays format places a premium on team success — and responsibility. Devor kept up his end of the bargain, twice, as he and juniors Jesus Galvan and Matt Allen and freshman Kyle Decker won both the 110-meterhurdle shuttle and returned to win the 300s.
On a day of dominant individual performances, it was the St. Charles East triumvirate of Jordan Shead, KelseyGentry and Britney Williams who were the difference-makers at the eight-team St. Charles North girls track andfield invitational.
St. Charles East earned the final title of the meet, taking home the 1,600 relay as Jake Mazanke, Nick Devor, Ben Manibog and Connor Larson ran 3:23.98 to hold off Waubonsie Valley for the win.
“There is no way a set of human eyes could have picked a winner,” Filip said after edging Bartlett sophomore Alex Bailey and St. Charles East senior Nick Devor by three one-hundredths. “I had the best strt out of the blocks. I eventually fought them all off until the end.”
The St. Charles East fifth-place team showing was inconceivable without the all-around day Britney Williams fashioned. The Saints’ junior was the class of the field at 400 meters, becoming the only athlete to break the minute barrier with her 59.0 effort. St. Charles East received over one-third of its 47 team points in the event after senior Kelsey Gentry placed third. Williams was also fourth in the cutthroat fields at 55 and 200 meters.
“I was really happy with (the day overall),” Williams said. “My goal was to work on my finish. I still have some work to do (before outdoor season starts).”
St. Charles East also received top-notch efforts with third-place finishes from Laney Decrow, Sarah Hill and Mallory Abel in the high jump, 3,200 and 1,600 runs.
