We have one more week to prove it
By John Lemon, Daily Herald, Nov 5, 2009

St. Charles East's Mallory Abel (is) poised to finish in the top 25 to earn all-state.
Denise Hefferin's St. Charles East team finished one spot behind Geneva at sectional and also will run at Peoria. Mallory Abel, a sophomore, is coming off a sixth-place finish at sectional and Hefferin said she could be top 15 at state. Abel placed 38th at state last year.
Other sectional finishers were: Grace Gordon (27th), Jessica Evans (28th), Sarah Hill (33rd), Holly Robertson (36th) and Colleen Earl (39th).
"We ran a really gutsy race," Hefferin said. "(Abel had) stomach flu, nerves, who knows. She knows she can run faster.
We have one more week to prove it." Read the article...

1998-99 Four state champs agree: STC was a special place to be
By Craig Brueske, Daily Herald, Nov 1, 2009

What do Denise Hefferin, Casey Dauw, Patrice Feulner and Jim Caine have in common?

First and foremost, they're graduates of St. Charles (East) High School..

But the quartet also shares another common bond - as athletes who played valuable roles during the Saints' record-breaking 1998-99 season when seven teams (boys golf, girls cross country, girls swimming, boys swimming, drill team, girls soccer and baseball) captured state championships. St. Charles dominated state in magical 1998-99
By Craig Brueske, Daily Herald, Nov 1, 2009

A little more than 10 years ago, St. Charles High School experienced the joy of winning a state championship - seven times during the same season.

The Saints' girls cross country team repeated as Class AA state champion, scoring an 83-111 triumph over second-place Naperville North at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

"The goal was to run our best race at the state meet," said former Saints coach Tom Roderick.

The Saints did just that, as senior Tera Moody (12th) and sophomores Carrie Phelps (22nd) and Christine Wampach (23rd) earned all-state status as a result of their top-25 finishes. Denise Hefferin, who will guide St. Charles East to this weekend's state meet in Peoria as coach, placed 32nd as a junior in 1998, supported by Renee Kleckner (50th). Read the article...

St. Charles East will send its team to state: Mallory Abel (sixth), Grace Gordon (27th), Jessica Evans (28th), Sarah Hill (33rd), Holly Robertson (36th) and Colleen Earl (39th).
"Great overall team race," Saints coach Denise Hefferin said. "It was a really muddy course but that didn't play into our hands either way. The girls ran a really tough race, ran as a team, that was good."   Read the article...

St. Charles East overcomes sickness to win regional
Daily Herald, Oct 24, 2009
The St. Charles East girls cross country team wasn't in top form Saturday at the St. Charles North Class 3A regional. The illness that forced the school to close for three days hit the Saints. That didn't stop East from winning the team title with 36 points.
Sophomore Mallory Abel, who Hefferin said had a fever most of the week, finished third in 19:11. The Saints had four of the top-seven finishers. Colleen Earl was fifth (19:55.8), Jessica Evans was sixth (20:01.8) and Grace Gordon (20:03). Freshman Sarah Hill's 15th-place finish in 20:31.8 also counted toward the Saints' team score. Saints stay sloppy course at XC regionals
The top runner for East was senior Mike Faith in 16:52. The Saints also qualified for the sectional meet.
Visiting the East tent after the girls’ race, it was difficult to tell that the Saints had just breezed to the team title. With girls coughing and getting taped up, it looked like a MASH tent.
“Half our team is sick,” said Saints coach Denise Hefferin. “We assume that every other team is dealing with some of the same stuff. You work through it, you work around it, and do the best you can.”
Every other team, however, didn’t have their school shut down for most of the week due to illness. Read the article...

The Saints begin life after Lizzy Hynes, now at Boston College after being a fixture among the state's elite in both cross country and track the past four years.

Senior Holly Robertson brings back two years of state experience, a "strong leader on the team," according to Hefferin. Senior Grace Gordon also has been on two state teams, while senior Jacki Leibforth, junior Collen Earl, junior Claire Sanchez, junior Rachel Rawson and sophomore Kristin Sheehan all are going to battle for spots in the lineup along with newcomers Sara Hill and Lizzy Deutsch.
