Saints Challenge 5K & Youth Mile - June 20
June 20, 2010
32nd annual Saints Challenge 5K
and Jeff Leavey Youth Mile races.
It's a Saints Father's Day tradition.Get the whole family out to run the 5k or the 1 mile fun run before you relax on Dad's Day. T-shirts, goodie bags and great raffle prizes!
SAINTS DADS, MOMS - WE NEED YOU! We REALLY need YOUR help at the Saints Challenge 5K race on Sunday, June 20th. Join the gang early that morning at the stadium in a SAINTS father’s day tradition and help us raise money for next year’s teams. This is our biggest fundraiser of the entire year. So far ZERO parents have told us that they would be there but we KNOW that you meant to sign up at the banquet - it was a busy night. Money from this fundraiser buys shirts for the team, funds travel expenses and goes toward track equipment purchases (current project: a new pole vault pit).
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - meet at the stadium concession stand:
10 parents for registration/setup at 6:30 a.m.
7 for course, meet at 7:30,
3 for finish line, meet at 7:30,
1 person on the bike at 7:45 to follow the racers on the course (you will ride 3.1 miles SLOWLY)
3 people that can stay until 11:30 and help clean up after the race.
You CAN sign up for more than one job or you can help with registration and still run/walk the 5K:
- The people who volunteer to clean up can come earlier and work another part of the race.
- People who work registration will be able to help on the course, the water table and the finish line.

Busloads of state qualifiers
Daily Herald, May 14, 2010 Busloads of state qualifiers advanced to next week's state meet in Charleston after running, jumping and
throwing in ideal conditions at the Bartlett Class 3A girls track and field sectional held at Millennium Field
in Streamwood Friday.
St. Charles East was led by four-year qualifier Maya Rittmanic. The senior won the long jump (16-91/2),
the high jump (5-1) and finished second in the triple jump (34-11).
"I feel so good that I did it again," Rittmanic said of a triple qualification. "It all turned out OK."
Several Saints qualified, including: the 400 relay team of Kelsey Gentry, Heather Mende, Rachel Rawson and Brittney Williams (48.89); sophomore Mallory Abel was second in the 3,200 run (11:15.18); Danielle
Kuzniewski won the 200-meter dash in 26.62, and the senior was fifth in the 100 high hurdles in a
qualifying time of 12.369, a mere .002 seconds shy of a tie for fourth; senior Holly Robertson qualified in
the mile (5:13.44), and the 1,600-meter relay team finished fifth (4:05.40), enough to qualify for state by
1.34 seconds. Read the full article.
Meeting or beating the standards
Kane County Chronicle, May 14, 2010 St. Charles East’s Maya Rittmanic once again leapt to the top of the jumping field.
East senior Danielle Kuzniewski came through to win the 200 meters and anchor the victorious 4x100-meter relay. She also will compete in the 100 meters at Charleston after narrowly taking second behind Hoffman Estates’ Emily D’Amico, 12.367 to 12.369.
“After the 4x1, I felt really relaxed, and I still do, but it still hasn’t hit me I’m going in three events,” said Kuzniewski, a Northern Florida recruit. “I could never have expected three races like these all in one.”
Three more just like them next week, plus a strong showing from Rittmanic – a fellow fourth-year varsity athlete headed for Smith University – would cap her career in style.
Kuzniewski and Rittmanic – the long and high jump champion and triple jump runner-up – have led the Saints all season and are looking forward to seeing how well they can score with a younger group.
Sophomore sprinters Heather Mende and Kelsey Gentry are part of the state-bound 4x100 relay along with freshman Brittney Williams and Kuzniewski. Mende, Gentry, Williams and Rachel Rawson also will compete in the 4x400.
Saints sophomore Mallory Abel will go for the distance after qualifying in the 3,200 and will be joined by Holly Robertson who qualified in the 1,600. Read the full article.
Mayar Rittmanic won the Triblocal High School Player of The Month contest for May.
Maya Rittmanic was recently honored at her school as the TribLocal High School Player of the Month by St. Charles Toyota, which donated a $500 check to her school.
Rittmanic is a member of the Fighting Saints girls track team. She is a four-year varsity athlete in cross country and track and field and a four-year qualifier for the state track meet (freshmen year in long jump, sophomore year in long jump and high jump, junior and senior years in long jump, high jump and triple jump). She received all state honors in high jump and long jump, Upstate Eight All-Conference honors in long jump, high jump and triple jump each year that she’s competed. Read the full article.

St. Charles East girls track continues Upstate Eight success
Kane County Chronicle, May 7, 2010 A special wrinkle this spring allows the winner of the Upstate Eight Conference girls track meet to keep the trophy indefinitely because of league expansion set for the coming school year.
The host Saints defeated Waubonsie Valley, 124.25-89.25, in a nerve-racking race that resembled East’s winning margin of 114-95 against the Warriors in the UEC indoor meet in March.
“It’s usually pretty tight between us,” Maya Rittmanic said, “and this year there’s extra meaning because it’s the last conference meet before they do divisions.”
East’s champions included Rittmanic (high jump), Annie Martines (300-meter hurdles), the 4x400 relay and the 4x200 relay, which anchor Allison Manley wrapped up in 1:50.62, without much incident.
(It was) a tight 100 dash that included second-place Danielle Kuzniewski of East running a time of 12.82 seconds. Later, Kuzniewski ran 26.8 seconds to take second in the 200, clipping teammate Brittney Williams, who was third.
“That was a big deal for us and a big part of what put us over the top,” East coach Denise Hefferin said. Read the full article.
St. Charles East dethrones Waubonsie Valley in UEC
Daily Herald, May 7, 2010 After a decade of watching Waubonsie Valley and Neuqua Valley dominate the Upstate Eight Conference in girls track and field, St Charles East has reclaimed it once-vaunted status.
The Saints ended the Warriors' consecutive conference-championship run as freshman Brittney Williams' anchor-leg-win in the 1,600-meter relay solidified their first league title since 2000 with 124.25 points.
The Saints' battle-hardened senior stars Danielle Kuzniewski and Maya Rittmanic paved the way. Rittmanic went 5 foot, 3 inches in the high jump to claim victory after settling for second place in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Rittmanic placed at state in all three last spring. Kuzniewski was runner-up in both short sprints, and Williams' third-place at 200 meters typified the Saints' scoring uniqueness.
"I'm going home with three second-place finishes," said Kuzniewski, who also anchored the Saints' 400 relay. "That's not too bad. Unlike other schools, we can double place (in events)."
Nowhere was the Saints' ability to score in bunches better illustrated than the 300 hurdles. Annie Martines' speed down the home stretch enabled sophomore to win the event, with classmate Lydia Warren placing third. Mallory Abel and Holly Robertson did likewise at 1,600 meters for the Saints.
"We had a lot of girls finishing in the top six," St. Charles East coach Denise Heffrin, a member of the Saints' last conference champion, said. "It makes a lot of difference for us, just like it did in indoor (conference)." Read the full article.

Wind wreaks havoc at Kane County meet
Courier News, May 1, 2010 Combating 35-mph wind gusts proved the real test for competitors at Friday's Kane County girls track invitational. It was so windy, they quit the pole vault after one of two flights.
St. Charles East, which finished third with 83 points, was quite competitive despite conditions. Mallory Abel won the 3,200 meters in 11:51.9 over Geneva's Liza Tauscher (11:58.6), and the Saints also got a third from Holly Robertson (12:00.4). It was one of three first-place finishes for the Saints. Maya Rittmanic won the high jump (4-11) and Danielle Kuzniewski the 200 dash (26.7). "It was hard running against that wind but my coach said at the beginning to stay in it as long as I can and we'll try to go at the mile if you're feeling good," Mallory said. Obviously the wind held up times badly in a race as long as the 3,200.
Rittmanic also contributed a second in the long jump (16-2) and third in the triple jump (35-11)."The high jump was ridiculous," Rittmanic said. "I thought the wind might help a little bit (with speed), but the problem is it pushes you when you're running, so you jump from too close to the bar and you jump into the bar. In triple jump and long jump it helped, I suppose, a little bit with speed, but it messes up your steps. If you could find your balance between getting your steps and running with the wind it really helps." Read the full article.
Batavia’s streak snapped Friday, April 30, 2010, Kane County Chronicle
Anna Deufel of Rosary clipped St. Charles East’s Danielle Kuzniewski in the 100 meters before the Saints senior got even in the 200. East sophomore Mallory Abel also has been feeling a few minor pains but has amended workouts to stay sharp and healthy. Her winning 3,200 time of 11:51.9 was well shy of her seeding, but she and the rest of the field weren’t too worried about those details considering Mother Nature. Maya Rittmanic starred for East in the jumping events, winning the high jump (4-11) while placing second in the long jump and third in the triple. The rain may have stayed away for most of the night, but a persistent and troublesome wind gusted throughout. Read the full article.
West Aurora ends Batavia's run Friday, April 30, 2010, Daily Herald
Sprinters Anna Deufel and Danielle Kuzniewski were yet two more headliners. Deufel edged Kuzniewski at 100 meters in record time, only to have the St. Charles East senior maven deny the Rosary junior at 200 meters.
"I really wanted to win the one," Kuzniewski said. "There were a lot of fast girls."
St. Charles East three-event state-finalist Maya Rittmanic won the high jump after taking third in the triple jump and second in the long jump.
"I still need to work on the long jump," the Smith College recruit said. "I think I'm pretty good at my other jumps." Read the full article.
Prep Track and Field Insider: Kane County Invite Preview Kane County Chronicle, Thursday, April 22, 2010 Gunnin’ Saints The St. Charles East girls finished fourth at Friday’s Gus Scott Naperville North Invitational behind several strong performances from its veterans.
Among them: strong runs in the 3,200 from Holly Robertson, Mallory Abel and Grace Gordon in separate flights and a good day of jumping from Maya Rittmanic (16-1 high jump, 36-0.5 triple jump).
East entered the season looking for big contributions from returners, but a recent surge of newcomers, including sprinters Kelsey Gentry and Heather Mende, have put the team in good position entering the girls Kane County Meet.

Girls' Indoor UEC: Saints take conference title
3/19/2010, Kane County Chronicle
St. Charles East girls track coach Denise Hefferin knew her team was expected to finish second in
Thursday’s UEC Indoor Track Championship.
Her expectations were a little higher.
“We were seeded to be second place by about five points, so we just tried to double score whenever possible and try to find
combinations in the top six of every event,” she said. “We were right on track and where we wanted to be all night.”
Hefferin’s instincts proved to be accurate, as the Saints cruised to a first-place finish with 114 points.
East’s victory came largely from its strong performances in the last few events. Rachel Rawson and Danielle Kuzniewski earned first place in the 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash, respectively.
Kuzniewski’s performance was especially impressive, as she left the rest of the field behind literally moments after jolting out
of her stance. Kuzniewski finished the race with a time of 27.01.
“I think I ran a great race. I haven’t run a 200 in a few meets now,” Kuzniewski said. “I know that team-wise we’re really close
to Waubonsie, and I know my coach wanted me to win, so that’s what I tried to do.” Read the full article...
Girls' Indoor UEC: St. Charles East dethrones Waubonsie Valley
3/19/2010, Daily Herald
St. Charles East junior sprinter Rachel Rawson said there was a common denominator among her
teammates this week in preparation for the Upstate Eight Conference indoor track and field championship
- the absence of Shakeia Pinnick.
"We have been talking about it all week," Rawson said. "We finally have a chance."
The incomparable Pinnick led Waubonsie Valley to four consecutive indoor league titles during her
decorated career, but the Saints were up to the task down the stretch. Danielle Kuzniewski and freshman
classmate Brittney Williams swept the penultimate event - the 200 meters - and the Saints' quartet of Heather Mende, Tasushia Mugge, Rawson and Kelsey Gentry officially ended the Warriors' four-year
conference reign by capturing the event-ending 1,600-meter relay. The Saints' 28 points over the final two
events enabled the squad to deny Waubonsie Valley, 114-95, for top honors Thursday night at St.
Charles East. "The double scoring is what solidifies any meet for us," St. Charles East coach Denise Hefferin said.
In the field events, the Saints' returning all-state jumper Maya Rittmanic anchored the squad with her
runner-up showings in the long, high and triple jump.
"I think I contributed to the team (more than anything else)," Rittmanic said. "For the horizontal jumps I
want to do even better (outdoors)."
Rawson reversed the Warriors' momentum with her 63.31-second showing in taking gold at 400 meters.
"I just got back from being sick with mono," Rawson said. "Usually I'm an 800 runner. I am not up to full
par yet. We would love to beat Waubonsie."
The Saints' collective wishes came to fruition as the one-two finish at 200 meters completely altered the
outcome.
"I just wanted to do it for the team," said Kuzniewski, a returning outdoor state qualifier in the event. Read the full article...
