Weekend of thrills at state track finals
    6/3/09, Daily Herald
What comes around goes around: Wes Allen was a sophomore on St. Charles East's state-qualifying 1,600 relay in 2007. Both Allen and Luke Ploszek ran on the Saints' 800 relay that made it downstate that year. They had mentors then, seniors like Keenen Sellers, Mike Jacobsmeyer, Travis Nier and two-time all-state 400 runner Alex Jackson. This season, Ploszek and Allen were themselves the mentors. They teamed with sophomores Dillon Mugge and Mike Brown on a state-qualifying 800 relay. Read the full article.

St. Charles East seniors Wes Allen and Luke Ploszek didn't make it in the 800 relay. That didn't dim their satisfaction. "We really just made it our goal to get down here one last time and get our spikes blue on the bottom, just make the most of it," Ploszek said of O'Brien Stadium's blue surface. "And we did that this year. We're going out with our heads held high. we had a fun year." Read the full article.

The hobbled quartet of Mike Brown, Wes Allen, Dillon Mugge and Luke Ploszek competed together for only the second time all season – sectionals was the first – as injuries troubled the team since the indoor season. "It was such a fast field out there," Allen said. "Just to get down here after the season that we had was tremendous." Read the full article.

Now that it's finally happened, I feel good that I've worked this hard and I finally get to show myself how hard I've worked."
Norville edged East's Maya Rittmanic by a quarter of an inch in the triple jump to keep the junior from the finals. Rittmanic, who also made the prelims in the long jump, will compete only in the high jump finals.

    Hynes breaks school record again

    5/8/09, The CHRONICLE
Even if St. Charles East didn't place first in the Upstate Conference Girls Track Meet, there was plenty of reasons for the Saints' camp to celebrate. The greatest of which arguably came from Lizzy Hynes' second school record-breaking time in the 3,200-meter run in two weeks. Hynes ably avoided a flameout, speeding to first in 10:32.2, outpacing Flanagan by nine seconds. East's Mallory Abel followed them both to place third in 11:36.75.
East also flexed its muscles in the 4x200-meter relay, placing second in 1:49.44. "This is the year we've had a sprints team, instead of just a few really good sprinters," Hefferin said. "It started during [the indoor season] and has solidified outdoors."
East finised second to Waubonsie Valley with 94 points. Read the full article.

Junior sprinter Danielle Kuzniewski was the Saints' guiding light, placing second in the 100 and 200 meters. Kuzniewski also anchored the Saints' two sprint relays to runner-up places. Kuzniewski, teamed with Jess Nier, Rittmanic, Heather Mende and Kelsey Gentry in the Saints' sprint relays.
Allie Devor and Maya Rittmanic were equally consistent in the field for St. Charles East. Devor won the shot put and took second in the discus; Rittmanic was third in both the long and high jumps.

The results can be eye-popping. At the Gus Scott invitational earlier this season, McKinzie Shulz and Lizzy Hynes offered convincing testimonies. The latter, a four-year standout for St. Charles East, dazzled in the 3,200 meters with a scintillating time of 10 minutes and 33.4 seconds.

  • John Bell invitational
    4/19/09, Daily Herald
Loran admitted running against distance dynamo Neuqua Valley was a motivator. So did St. Charles East's Nick Cramer, who anchored the Saints' 3,200-meter relay for Tim Johnson, Jacob Zahn and Jared Eads. "That had been our goal from the start, to keep up with Neuqua," Cramer said. Over his second 400 meters Cramer found another gear and survived a grueling final 70 meters to win in 8:04.77. Cramer, Plainfield South's Juliano Lodi and Downers Grove North's Dan Phistry all crossed the line within about a halfsecond. "I didn't want to let my team down, lose anything," said Cramer, the sole senior of his relay squad. "I just worked as hard as I could. And it paid off."
Another relay - the 400 group of Wes Allen, Dillon Mugge, Michael Brown and Luke Ploszek - placed third, helping the Saints finish eighth overall. Read the full article.

Warren smiled – and exhaled – after her 17.9-second run. Warren says: "I've kind of been in and out of it. I could run varsity, but then they'll put me on JV and then they'll throw me on varsity...I just go with the flow."
